Known as the Light City for its architectural charm, Taxco also represents an important mining centre famous for its silver. Firstly we visit the Santa Prisca Church, one of few Baroque buildings in the state, and set off on a walking tour through the enchanting narrow and stone streets that wind their way round the city. Journey back through the ages thanks to Taxco’s historic atmosphere as well as its buildings and palaces that retain their original features. Next we make a stop for lunch to delight you with delicious food in a local restaurant. According to the legend, La Roqueta Island was used as a former storage place of pirate treasure, where now you can find a zoo, a lighthouse, two fabulous beaches and snorkelling areas. On our way back to Acapulco, be surprised by the enormous two tonne bronze statue lying amongst the rocks on the seabed. It’s Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of fishermen. Get on board an air conditioned vehicle to visit the main historical places in Acapulco. We get started in Las Brisas overlooking Acapulco Bay to pay a visit to the Chapel of Peace, erected as a memorial to the builder’s two children who perished in a place crash. Just to the side a huge 42 metre cross reaches high into the sky, which you can see from any point in the port. The views over the bay from the chapel will leave you amazed. Our next stop is the San Diego Fort, home to the Historical Museum of Acapulco, unique in design and military engineering. The fort was built in 1567 and destroyed later on in an earthquake. After its reconstruction in 1700, the exhibition now traces history from colonial times to present day. After passing through the centre of the city, where you can stop briefly to buy a souvenir, we arrive at the house of Dolores Olmedo, a great patron of the arts and culture in Mexico. Between 1956 and 1957, when Diego Rivera was a friend of Mrs. Olmedo he lived in her house due to illness. Here he painted his last work before dying. Before returning to your hotel, visit Hotel Los Flamingos, formerly owned by movie legend John Wayne. Once ready, we set sail towards Roqueta Island, a beautiful natural island classified as a Protected Natural Area. Its clear and calm waters make for a comfortable dive, and with only slight movements you can discover countless fish and a huge variety of corals.
