Built by the romans in the first century, the Pont du Gard is a stone aqueduct built by the Romans to supply Nimes with water from a spring at Uzès. At Nimes, be awed by the roman amphitheatre which can seat more than 16, 000 people. Modernised with a removable roof, it is still in use today for rock concerts and other performances. It is also a real treat to see the Maison Carrée in all its glory, looking as good as the day as it was built in 16BC. As the seat of a duke, a bishop and a consul, Uzès has preserved its character as a medieval stronghold.
