Ascend into the Doi Suthep-Doi Pui mountain park and visit ornate Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The city of Chiang Mai lies on the plain, but it is dominated by the backdrop of the twin peak Doi Suthep-Doi Pui National Park, rising to 5250 ft. Near the summit of Doi Suthep, one finds the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, an important pilgrimage site for Northern Thailand. Its gold-plated chedi can be seen glistening in the morning sunlight from the city below. The temple was founded in the late 1300s, its location apparently was chosen by a white elephant which was pursued by the Lanna king Kuena. The elephant ascended the peak, trumpeted, turned around three times, then died! There is a memorial to the beast on the temple grounds. Ascent today is via a Naga staircase of almost 300 steps, but for a small extra charge, one can take a cable car. There are splendid views from the temple over Chiang Mai city. Although the town of Chiang Dao is famous for its Elephant Training Center, several adventurers have come to these parts for another reason altogether: cave trekking. The Chiang Dao Cave (Wat Tham Chiang Dao) is without a doubt one of the area’s more fascinating sites. Five limestone caverns invite one to uncover its beautiful stalactites, stalagmites, Buddha statues, and votive offerings from faithful pilgrims. We’ll drive around 88km (55mi) north of Chiang Mai to reach the starting point. Before venturing inside, explore the beautiful grounds outside dotted with scenic ruins, temples and roadside stops. After paying a small entrance fee, you can then begin the journey through a system of interconnected caverns extending over 10km (7 mi) into the heart of the mountain. Expect cooler air in here, although hot days may create humid conditions at times. Two to three of the caves make for an easy visit on your own, as they’re illuminated by electric lights. You’ll find Buddha statues here, including a 4-metre (13 ft) reclining one. Don’t miss the row of five seated Buddhas in the first cavern, as many travellers find them particularly impressive. If you want to venture further, we would advise hiring a guide with a gas lantern to help navigate the unlit sections. The flashlight of your phone would come in handy here! While the main caves are large and open with soaring ceilings, the offshoot parts can get narrow with low overhangs. This full-day tour starts with a beautiful drive to Mae Orn. We will stop at the San Kampaeng market to buy the ingredients for our lunch and fruit of the season. We will continue to Mae Kam Pong. This small village is located approx. 30 km north of Chiang Mai and is known for their traditional agriculture, rice, teas and coffee. Upon arrival in Mae Kam Pong we will be met by some of the villagers and our local community guide. You will learn about the history of this remarkable village at the Education Centre, and have a lovely walk around the village. Most villagers are engaged in growing bai miang, a kind of plant that can be processed into tea. Apart from bai miang, they also grow coffee and aromatic mushrooms. Other villagers are making handicrafts such as decorated pillows filled with tealeaves, rattan baskets and bamboo furniture. Various walks are possible around Mae Kam Pong.
