You'll stop in at one of the little towns for a delicious lunch (not included), to recharge and refuel for the rest of your day. An early start takes you westwards towards Kinlochewe and the Beine Eighe National Nature Reserve. The imposing Bein Eighe Ridge gives way to the world famous Loch Maree, home to the majestic Golden Eagle. As we head down through Torridon towards Shieldaig, we pass some of Europe’s most ancient geology and most wild scenery. We travel on up the renowned Bealach na Ba (pass of the cattle) and onto the isolated village of Applecross for lunch. You’ll enjoy incredible views towards Skye and the Hebrides as we make our way towards Eilean Donan castle, the picture-perfect castle perched on a junction of three lochs. Tucked up near the banks of the River Avon, it’s a lovely wee spot for a visit. You may even recognise it from the 2004 film One Last Chance starring Kevin McKidd and Dougary Scott. But we’re here for the whisky so we head straight for The Whisky Castle. This shop has been selling over 600 of the finest malt whiskies of Scotland for over 120 years. Whisky is what they do, it’s what they love, so pay close attention to the tutored tasting you’ll be lucky enough to experience. Shopped-out, history-filled, and perhaps a wee bit buzzed, it’s time to return to Inverness through the braes of Glenlivet, enjoying the stunning hillside views as you go.

You first venture to the ancient burial site of Clava Cairns. This Bronze Age ‘graveyard’ has survived four millennia and is a great spot to take atmospheric photos. They say the stone circle here was the inspiration for the Craigh na Dun time portal in the Outlander books. You then visit Culloden, one of the most important locations in Scottish history. It was here that a 60-year series of uprisings finally ended in a tumultuous battle. You can explore the visitor centre and pay tribute to those who lost their lives at the last ever battle fought on British soil. You ramble along to Glen Affric and stop off for walks amongst the indigenous Caledonian pine trees. You get the chance to enjoy views over Loch Affric and the mountains beyond, and your driver-guide ensures you go to the best waterfalls and photo spots throughout the afternoon. Enjoy a view worthy of your camera on the new suspension bridge and breathe in the fresh forest air that surrounds you. Speaking of impressive.. . we continue North to our next destination which is sure to both thrill and inspire you. Ever wondered how glacial meltwater can affect a landscape, creating deep gorges? Us too. Corrieshalloch is one of the most spectacular gorges in Britain. Make sure you have good walking shoes for the short (yet steep) walk to a Victorian suspension bridge. All the better so you can have yet another incredible view over crashing waterfalls below. Designated a National Nature Reserve, be on the lookout for the rare species of cranefly or the species of ferns that grow in the microclimate of the gorge. Time for something a little different but equally as lovely – we stop in the village of Ullapool, known as the ‘Gateway to the Outer Hebrides’. With a strong fishing heritage, why not grab a quick snack of locally sourced seafood? Or maybe perusing the craft shops is more your thing. But don’t get too comfortable because the Highlands are calling you out again After a quick visit, we’re off to Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve. Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve is where the rocks come to life... or it seems that way. From stunning sculptures to poetry carved into rockfaces, it's a breathtaking spot to be sure. No visit to Scotland is complete without a ruinous castle. As you explore the quiet history of our next stop, Ardvreck Castle , try to imagine what it might have been like for the MacLeods clan living there in the 15th century, overlooking the mysterious Loch Assynt. As you gaze out over the loch, keep an eye out for the missing daughter of the MacLeod’s, Eimhir, also known as the ‘mermaid of Assynt’. The legend goes that instead of marrying the brute to whom she was betrothed, Eimhir plunged into the caverns of the loch and made a new home beneath the water’s surface. It’s time for a wee break so we head to the small fishing port and resort of Lochinver on the west coast of Scotland. Enjoy the beautiful mountain views and white sandy beaches as you perhaps munch on one of their legendary pies for lunch. I bet you weren’t prepared for a trip to the Caribbean while visiting Scotland? That’s how stepping onto Achmelvich Beach feels. Water as clear and blue as a crystal, sand as fine and white as snow. Enjoy a wee stroll, because no matter the weather this is a beautiful spot. Mermaids, pies, beaches, castles... it’s been a day to remember as we head back to Inverness that evening.
