The Levada walks are trails that follow the open canal system that crisscross the mountains dating back to the 16th century. Developed to distribute water from the wet regions of the north to the sunnier and drier regions of the south, they consequently make easy, yet no less impressive walks through the verdant countryside of Madeira. We travel to the Valley of Rabaçal, a spell-binding place that is one of the most popular walks in the region. Walk through sparkling emerald green valleys descending from the plateau of Paúl da Serra, passing the guesthouse of Rabaçal, and continuing along to the enchanting waterfalls. Admire the 100m high Risco waterfall on our way down to the 25 fountains of Levada, after which we reach a small lake located at the bottom of a cliff that towers high above. A popular excursion of the entire island, this is a tour that takes you to explore the diverse nature of Madeira’s landscapes in just one day. Visit the quaint fishing village of Camara de Lobos and the pretty Ribeira Brava and travel through the lush valley region to the Encumeada mountain pass which takes you 1007m above sea level. As we drive along, panoramic views over the north and south coast unfold before you; transporting you to the heart of tropical Madeira. We descend from high ground to the rugged north coast towards Porto Moniz, famed for its volcanic rock swimming pools, passing through São Vicente and Seixal with a stop for lunch (not included). From here it’s time to climb the mountains to Paúl da Serra and descend back down to the south west coast to Calheta and Ponta do Sol. The tour ends on a high note at the towering cliffs of Cabo Girão - the second highest in the world!

Continue up the winding mountain road until we reach Eira do Serrado, located in the heart of the island and offers panoramic views of the valley. The last stop will be at the Cristo Rei viewpoint, a 14-metre-high, imposing statue on a promontory that rises above the Atlantic.
