Salt Mines
Discover the remarkable history of Salzburg with a tour of the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine. Intrinsically linked to salt and indeed its very name means ‘salt castle’. The countryside around the city is famed for its salt mines, which produced ‘white gold’ in an area far from the sea and which have been an immense source of wealth since time immemorial. This is a salt mine visit with a difference as you enjoy a roller-coaster ride of emotions deep inside the mountain. Head south of Salzburg, past the beautiful baroque Hellbrunn Palace, into the stunning Salzburgerland countryside before arriving at the mine, which closed in the 1980s after centuries of producing salt. At the mine, receive protective clothing to keep warm – and to look the real deal! Travel in a former miners’ train into the heart of the mountain while a guide regales you with tales of the salt mining in the area since Celtic times thousands of years ago. Discover this secret world of kilometers-long labyrinths dug by miners, with their bare hands, deep into the mountain. Using the wet mining technique, they would dissolve the rock in the water and thus end up with salt. Once inside the cave, have fun on the long miners' slides and enjoy a wonderful raft cruise across a subterranean salt lake. There is also a magical multimedia show that will light up the underground lake and blow you away. Head back to the outside world aboard the miners’ train having discovered the rock on which Salzburg was built. Important Information Inside the salt mine, there is a constant temperature of +12 degrees Celsius (53 Fahrenheit) all year around. Please wear warm clothes. Additionally, sturdy shoes are recommended. You will receive mandatory overalls to wear at the salt mines. Please note strollers or buggies are not allowed inside the mines. Inclusions: Tickets Exclusions: Equipment Meal Drinks Important Info: Remember to bring the voucher and valid photo ID with you Redeem Info: PRINTED - Printed Voucher. Salzburg from Vienna
This is no mere transfer to the city. The drive through the Salzkammergut region will amaze you with its crystal-clear glacial lakes and soaring mountains accentuated with white, limestone deposits. You’ll feel like you’re driving in a landscape painting. No surprise many artists have flocked to this resort area to capture the incredible views. The region’s name means ‘Estate of the Salt Chamber’ and it was here that the Habsburg dynasty became very rich mining the so-called ‘white gold’. Today what glitters are the spectacular lakes carved from the landscape during the Ice Ages. We pass Lake Wolfgang, the region’s largest lake. We also drive around the beloved Lake Fuschl protected by Castle Fuschl. Marshy inlets rim the water that is so clean that it’s drinkable. The visibility reaches six metres and, even though it’s a glacial lake, the water is warm attracting travellers and Austrians alike. You’ll be inspired to belt out an aria or two amid this spectacular scenery. However, the true crescendo will arrive when we reach Salzburg, the home of the 18th century musical maestro Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We set off to explore its old town; admire the well-preserved historic centre with its elaborate Baroque architecture and well-manicured parks. A UNESCO Heritage Site, Salzburg’s old town retains its old-world charm with a vibrant present-day art and music scene. See the principle sites and hear an aria or two drifting from the many music halls or homes. Languages English and Spanish Inclusions: Transport Guide Important Info: Please make sure you answer all the mandatory questions during the booking process and ensure that you have provided your correct email address. Join us for an unforgettable journey! Meet our team at 9am at Mirabellplatz 2 in Salzburg’s city center. At 9:15am, hop on our comfortable shuttle for a scenic ride to the Hallein salt mines. Upon arrival at the salt mines, you will be greeted directly by a guide who will lead you to the entrance. Your ticket includes a guided tour starting around 10:10am. After the tour, stop by the Salzwelten shop for unique salt-themed souvenirs. We’ll depart from the Salzwelten at 12:15pm and return to Salzburg Mirabellplatz by 1pm, leaving you with memories of an epic journey into the heart of history. Discover the magic of salt — the mineral that shaped the world! The White Gold of History Salt’s story stretches back billions of years, shaping landscapes and civilizations alike. Around 250 million years ago, a vast salt lake covered what’s now Austria and Germany. Over time, the water evaporated, leaving behind rich salt deposits that tectonic forces later pushed up into the Alps — a process still happening today. Humans discovered salt’s power early on. By 4, 000 BC, people were preserving food with it. The Celts in Dürrnberg began mining salt by the 6th century BC, building a thriving community. By the Middle Ages, Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops recognized salt as a major source of wealth, funding the city’s grand architecture. Today, you can step into this history at Salzwelten Salzburg — home to the world’s oldest visitor mine.
